Beyond the question of why you're using NRPE to monitor local resources,
your test above isn't really valid. Nagios isn't the root user and
doesn't use the root environment. Become the nagios user and try again.
Make sure that the command you're executing matches the command_line for
the check_nrpe command definition, including full path substation, etc.
