No notification when host down

Does it show the notification in the notifications screen?  If so,
check the log for your email system (probably /var/log/maillog or
something similar).

Is there anything in the nagios log of any interest during that time?

What is your host definition (in hosts.cfg probably)?

Is the host flapping?
