Host notifications and parents

I'm in the process of migrating to nagios from netsaint. My only issue
is that parents don't seem to behave the same way as they do in
netsaint. In netsaint if host1 is a parent for host2 and host3 then I
do not get host notifications for host2 and host3 when host1 is down.
In Nagios, with the same parent configuration I get notifications for
host2 and host3 when host1 is down. I have unreachable notifications
disabled in my host definitions as well as my contact definitions. I'm
not sure if I'm missing something but if this is how parents behave now,
what's the point of defining them? At the moment I'm getting around
this by using hostdependency definitions. Thanks.
