You might want to look at the feature of Nagios called "Service and Host
Result Freshness Checks" desribed in Nagios documentation
(http://nagios.sourceforge.net/docs/2_0/freshness.html). There are also
some hints in "Distributed Monitoring". Both chapters were very hepful
for me to setup similar configuration.
