As you note from the man page for snmpstatus - it does a lot of things -
Question is are they useful?

You mentioned total traffic -
snmpstatus adds up all the available counters -
What happens when the counters roll over?
The counters only count from when the snmp agent was (re)started.
On cisco and other network devices you can clear counters at any time -
snmpstatus would not know the difference.

Is an absolute number that is always increasing (in a saw tooth pattern)
meaningful?

Much more useful would be aggregation of data rates/bandwidth used
across all interfaces - For this you will need an mrtg/cacti/cricket based
solution that can poll data on individual interfaces and then summarize
them. - Like Cricket's summary graphs where you add up values from other
entries. These can then be checked via check_rrd for threshold values.

If you need to see the operational status of all the interfaces - then
check_ifstatus will do.

It is this log that got me puzzled most of all. It seems the default
samples don't work too well. Only the HTTP details are currently resulting
in some logs.

Hi all,

I'm confused about my Nagios configuration. My Nagios monitoring host is
Linux (Slackware ) box. All clients I need to monitor are Tru64 boxes.
So, I was able to compile NRPE on the Tru64 boxes, but it appears I need all
plugins locally on the system. So I want to install the standard plugins
pack (nagios-plugins-1.4.2.tar), but the README tells me it expects nagios
to be installed. Do I need to install Nagios on all clients also ?

best regards,
Andy Kannberg

Well, modifying nagiosgraphers configuration to your needs does take
some time. In fact I had to taylor all the entries concerning data
acquisition to my needs. Now, I don't know if you know how to handle
regular expressions, but these and the service names are the lines that
probably need to be modified to your setup.

If you posted one of the entries not working and the corresponding
output from the check plugin someone, perhaps even I, might help you more.

For example, from my local system a service check I set up yesterday:
In the status detail page, I see the output from the checks:

> CPU=0%;10;20;; Storage=26853376;58720256;67108864;;
Objects=3244;1032192;1048576;; HitRatio=0%;;;; IPs=125;3584;4096;;
Clients=3;1792;2048;;

The service is called "Squid status" and one of the corresponding
entries in my nagiosgrapher configuration is

> define ngraph{
>         service_name            Squid status
>         graph_perf_regex        HitRatio=(\d+\.?\d*)%
>         graph_value             Hits
>         graph_units             %
>         graph_legend            Hit ratio
>         rrd_plottype            LINE1
>         rrd_color               0000FF
>         lowerlimit              0
>         page                    ProcessState
> }

Which produces the expected results, along with the links to the
graphics cgi in the service overview and -detail pages in Nagios' frontend.

With lots of logging during set up, I got these log entries from
nagiosgrapher when it encountered a service check for "Squid status" the
first time:

One thing to notice: If you modify the data capture setup, you will have
to manually modify the corresponding rrd file (or delete it and let
nagiosgrapher automatically recreate it) because the template for
inserting doesn't fit to the rrd file any more.

Let's see if you get that set up...

Hi John,

Write a SNMP-plugin to get your data.

I had thought of something like your idea too, but haven had the time yet.
But I would ask for things like network errors, no port, and so on....
I don't know how usefull it is but, sometimes you have to "kick the ball"
before it hits the goal.

But check out some shell-script / plugins and if you know something about
SNMP then you should be able to start collecting data.

Try this command in a shell >   "snmpwalk -v 1 W2K-netvorkhost -c public
.1.3.6"

W2K-Networkhost = some ip address

I could send you a sample-plugin on how I collect CPU data - set
thresholds and so on.

Thomas

For my Solaris clients, I only need the plugins and the NRPE daemon
and nrpe.cfg file. The plugins were already compiled for Solaris, so
you may need to compile those for Tru64.

No. Just install the plug-ins - you can even build the ones you like
separately (some of them, like mysql, require libraries you probably don't
have).

Subject: [Nagios-users] Question about Nagios configuration

Subject: [Nagios-users] NRPE-Problem

Hey everyone.

I compiled the NRPE plugin on my nagios (Suse) box and it compiled and
installed just fine, with no warnings or errors.

I also downloaded one of the NRPE_NT Plugins from the openexchange
forum, installed that and some service-checks like nt_cpuload on my
win2k machine.

Now, when trying to run the plugin:

nagios: ./check_nrpe -n -H <myhost-to-check-ip> -c nt_cpuload

it responds with :

CHECK_NRPE: Error receiving data from daemon.

I'd be grateful for anyone giving me a hint where to look.
My host-to-check replies to a telnet IP 5666 just fine, so I don't
think it is any connection problem. Also, I made sure the service is
running on the w2k machine.

Thanks,

Kai Reese

check_proc can be used to monitor processes. With my Oracle databases, I =
use=20
the check_oracle plugin instead to verify that the database is up. Also, =
I=20
have check_log2 watching the alert log for any ORA- strings so I'll know =
if=20
we hit an error. Be sure to set your max checks to 1 if you use this.

Hello

This problem can be caused by several issues. you are trying to connect wit=
h
SSL client to non SSL server if so run check_nrpe -n and it will disable th=
e
ssl option. i think this error also occures if you did not set
allowed_hosts=3D<nagios ip>. remember to restart the NRPE_NT each time you =
do
changes in the configuration

Hi,
=20
Try increasing your time out on your host check and see if it helps? How
bad is the latency on your network, and the hosts you are having
problems with, are they on your LAN or remote sites?

Hello group..

=20

I have been having this problem for some time now and I am getting
desperate..

=20

My Nagios central server reports certain hosts as being down with the
errors: "(No Information Returned From Host Check)" or "Plugin timed
out after 10 seconds"

=20

The distribution server on those sites report everything as being in
order, can anyone help me with this?

Hi all,

Is there any plugin which can monitor the (cpu-) ressources used by a
certain user? How can i monitor all the cpu-ressources in correlation used
by a certain type/name of process (e.g. cpu-usage of all httpd-processes)?

Is there any plugin which can do this?

Thanx in advance,

That's correct. NRPE =3D=3D Nagios Remote Plugin Executer with emphasis =
on
Remote Plugin. The plugins you intend to use must be installed on the
destination machine.

No you don't. The plugins can be run independent of Nagios. NRPE will
effectively take its place.

mode in nrpe.cfg helped some, too :) )

Subject: [Nagios-users] Nagios nrpe on AIX

Dear all,

I have seen in the nagios mailing list that it is possible to compile and
execute nrpe on aix 5.2 systems. My question is that I am trying to do th=
e
same but I am having problems with the check_disk plugin. The following
occurs:

If I perform

/nagios/libexec/check_disk -w 20 -c 10 -p /dev/hd1

I get an error (something like -p parameter is not valid ...). I have
tried also:

/nagios/libexec/check_disk -w 20 -c 10 -x /dev/hd1

and with this command I have a valid response but regarding all of disks,
not just the /dev/hd1:

DISK CRITICAL - free space: /var 1674 MB (82% inode=3D100%): /tmp 702 MB
(69% inode=3D99%): /home 1628 MB (79% inode=3D100%): /proc 0 MB (0%
inode=3DNANQ%): /opt 2017 MB (99% inode=3D100%): /oracle 75654 MB (55%
inode=3D100%): /oracle/u04 6838 MB (21% inode=3D100%): /oracle/u04/export=
s-nfs
114461 MB (60% inode=3D100%):

Could you please confirm the exact syntax of the check_disk command and i=
f
for anyone of you it is working on aix 5.2 boxes?

Un saludo,

Pablo

Subject: [Nagios-users] Notification script problems.. How do I debug

Hi,

I'm updating my notification to send SMS messages across the Canadian
Rogers network. I've found a WWW to SMS gateway that lets me send
messages, but I need to find why my script is failing.

My Notification script is as follows:=20
# 'notify-by-sms' command definition
define command{
        command_name    notify-by-sms
        command_line    /usr/lib/nagios/plugins/sms-msg.pl -m "Host
'$HOSTALIAS$' is $HOSTSTATE$\nInfo: $OUTPUT$\nTime: $DATETIME$"=20
-p $CONTACTPAGER$
        }

My Script:  /usr/lib/nagios/plugins/sms-msg.pl expects -m "message" -p
9055551212  and then feeds that into a system(curl ....); command. I
couldn't get LWP to work, so I used a system (curl); command.
If I copy the command line and fill in the values, it works fine. But if
I make a service go critical I don't receive notification, although my
e-mail notification works..

Any suggestions, or ideas?
