Free space in a mysql db..

This is the difference between the amount of disk storage that has been
"allocated" to mysql, and the amount of allocated space that's actually
being used by stored data

What is "free space in a mysql database"? As far as I know this is the
free space on the device /var/lib/mysql is running on. That can be
monitored with check_disk or whatever.

If you can restrict a mysql database to a certain amount of space there
must be some sql command to get this info - and then you can use a shell

script via ssh to check that.
