check the archives for more suggestions (this question is asked
periodically), but some of things that I use Nagios for on my network gear:

 availability - check-fast-alive (fping)
cpu, memory - I am currently using the gwfl plugins (see nagiosexchange.org)
interface throughput, errors - gwfl plugins

The gwfl plugins also provide graphing capabilities. There are some other
plugins listed on nagiosexchange.org that do the same thing.

[cut topology overview]

Start simple, and grow your monitoring based upon the needs of your business.
Look through the available plugins at nagiosexchange to see what other people
have done, and then use the ones that you like, modifying as necessary,
and/or write your own (you know your network/systems best).
