email notifications

Read the documentation on your unix system and make sure the mail command 
on the system is able to send out email messages.

Once you got that part working you can propably use the default nagios 
sections to send out notifications.

A recent Linux distribution should have email working in this minimal 
fashion out of the box. Solaris and other systems should have similar 
arrangements but you should consult the OS documentation to be sure.

I suggest you go ahaead and report specific issues if you run into them. 
But I also suggest you take 5 minutes to check with your favorite search 
engine in such event to look for the obvious answers first.
