You made -exactly- the same mistake I made when I began with Nagios...

I provide some details on the various ways of talking to monitored  
hosts on my website. Look on http://www.kilala.nl/Sysadmin and search  
for "Nagios: talking to clients" in the menu bar on the left...

Basically, you don't -have- to go with NRPE... there's a few other  
options as well. If you do decide to go with NRPE though, you're  
going to have to install the NRPE software on each of your clients.  
The main Nagios documentation provides details on the installation  
and configuration of NRPE.
