Monitoring router with check_snmp

Hi all,
This is a newbee question ,so please bear with me .
I would like to monitor my router to find out whether it is up or
not.Cananyone help me with an example of the
command.Browsing through the list I found that something has to be done with
the OID's.What is this OID all about?I use webmin to congfiure Nagios and
the SNMP MIB walk prints out a lot info which I cant just digest.Please help
me on this.
