new install won't start

I am lost. I am setup Nagios 1.2 many times. Now I have setup on my SuSE
9.3 box with rpm packages. All the files are there, I believe the
permissions are fine, the configuration file checks out OK with '-v' and
the log file just gives me the following. The lock file even has the
PID, but no such PID running after starting. Any ideas...

[1125887280] Finished daemonizing... (New PID=8640)
