Setting env variables from misc commands (email from field)

Hello all, I'm trying to set it so that when using nullmailer the From field 
will be "alerts" instead of root as it is currently. I tried to set it by 
doing:
export USER=alerts;/usr/bin/printf "%s" ...... etc
but nagios won't send out alerts when I have it set like that.

How can I set the from field??
