Nagios with a large number of services

Well, we've managed to set up a distributed monitoring Nagios set up
with 26,126 services and 2176 hosts, and the monitoring seems to be
working ok, at least according to our logs. Unfortunately, the web
interface doesn't seem to work, and terminates with an internal server
error: premature end of script headers in the Apache log. Initially we
had set up the monitoring system to handle only 2000 or so services, and
had no problems using the web interface under such a setup. What could
be going wrong? We're running this system on Fedora Core 3, with SELinux
disabled but otherwise stock. The central monitoring server (where the
web interface runs) is a dual PIII Xeon box, and the six distributed
servers we have are PIV machines with hyperthreading enabled. We're
running Nagios 1.2.
