Status Map Background Image

I'm having trouble figuring out how to display a background image in
the Status map.  I'm running Nagios 1.2 on Solaris 8 (sparc).  I dont
think it's a problem with gd libraries since normal gd2 images show up
on the statusmap....It just shows no background image.

----Excerpt of cgi.cfg----
statusmap_background=image.gd2

# ls -l /usr/local/nagios/share/images/image.gd2
-rw-r--r--   1 nagios   nagiocmd 5765483 Mar  4 10:45
/usr/local/nagios/share/images/image.gd2

any ideas on why this is not functioning?
