Host checks without service check

Hello,

Is there a way to have Nagios execute a host check (e.g. a simple
check-host-alive ping) without having any service checks defined for
that host? Whenever I configure hosts without configuring service checks
for them, nagios gives me configuration file warnings, and then the host
checks remain in "pending" state.

I have some devices that I only need to monitor for ping-ability. I
solved the problem by also adding a service check which also just does a
ping, but I'm wondering if I missed something and there is a simpler way
to do it.

Thanks -sjs
