Is there some constructive hacker out there (not on vacation) who could 
perhaps hack up a mailing-list bot to greet every newcomer to this list 
with a "The documentation is here. Read it or noone will care about your 
question."?

I'd be happy to host it. If noone else feels like it, I'll write it 
myself when I get back from my supposedly laptop-free vacation.
