event handlers

Hi,
 
I have NSCA running on a remote host that sends messages to Nagios
server which generates alerts.
I'd like to stop a service once that alerts comes.
 
Now here is my question :
 
Am i oblige to use eventhandlers ?
The service is checked only once, and turn to Hard state when a bad
status is detected.
 
What should i implement ?
