Host v Service Check

Nagios 2 allows for scheduled host checks...however this is discouraged
for reasons I am still not clear on.  Currently, we do not have host
checks scheduled regularly, but instead have a separate "Ping" service
that pings each host every 5 minutes to see if it is up.  My question is
does it make sense for us to enable and optimize host checks and get rid
of the ping service or is there a really good reason to never enable
regular host checks?
