Using newlines and control characters in config file

I remember once reading there was a special character sequence for using a
newline in config files (for sending as a string with check_tcp for example).
I cannot find this in the documentation, FAQ or mailing list archives. Could
somebody point me to this info.

Also, what is the appropriate way to put control characters (such as EOF/EOT)
in a config file?

Thanks,

Jason
