There are lots of perl, shell and other scripts in the plugins package in the contrib and plugins-scripts directories that are good examples as well as the documentation on how to write plugins at http://nagiosplug.sourceforge.net/. They're fairly easy to write provided you know how to check what you want to monitor from a shell.
