Hay Tim,

Had you enabled authentication option in cgi.cfg file
use_authentication=1  

Did u enabled authintication in your httpd.conf
i mean to say in your httpd.conf you need to specify
AllowOverride   AuthConfig
option in base directory of nagios.
also you will require to create .htaccess file in base directory of nagios.
and a password dataase file.

after doing so you must restart apache web server ...
