I have managed to get around this issue by having my check_nagios command 
actually run through nrpe - So my local machine actually checks its own 
Nagios status through nrpe - Not sure why this approach worked but i am now 
fully up and running.

thanks for showing me in the direction of the check_nagios_db plugin
