Plugin to monitor SMTP->POP3 delay?

Before writing my own, I thought I'd ask if someone else has invented
the wheel...

There are times where AntiVirus/AntiSpam on my windows-based mail server
either dies, or slows down too much due to some corrupt message in the
queue.  Both SMTP and POP3 respond fine, but the queue begins to start
backing up.

Has anyone written a plugin that will send a message to a mailbox via
SMTP to a server, and then check that same mailbox some seconds later to
make sure that it made it to the mailbox?
