Distributed monitoring

I would like to get pointers to any documentation that describes nagios 
distributed monitoring.  Does
an exhaustive document exist?  I would like to do distributed 
monitoring, using monitoring sources
other than Nagios for input.  I have text from syslog and other logs 
that I should be able to use to indicate
that something is down.
