difference between check_by_ssh / check_nrpe

dear list!

i've now got comfortable with nagios and i'm about to check the hole 
network. but therefor i need to know:

what is the main difference between check_by_ssh  and check_nrpe?

both of them needs a daemon on the remote server where from a 
script/binary is started. both connections are encrypted.

is there a performance-difference?
