Service/Host checks staying in pending state?!

Anyone know why there would be service and host checks that are in a 
constant pending state? I have about 100 servers being monitored with 
nagios currently and only a few never get checked because they are 
constantly in 'pending' state. Even if I force an immediate check on those 
hosts/services the check will never get executed. Thanks!
