I have not followed the thread, so please bear with me if this has 
already been mentioned. The error is most likely caused by compiling 
and/or running with the "wrong" libgd version. AFAIR you need to use 
libgd v.2, v.3 fails. This was a aproblem when I made some Debian 
packages for Woody, it was solved building against libgd2. It only 
affected the generation of graphics like in trends and the status maps, 
everything else was working fine.
