React if service is DOWN/FAILED

Hi, 

is it possible to react e.g. execute a command if a service is DOWN/FAILED 
within Nagios (or with a plugin)?
Otherwises i would write a small daemon that will read var/downtime.log etc. 
But maybe this is already a build-in feature of Nagios.
