This is what I do for our load-balanced services.  Each individual real server
is monitored, along with all the services it offers.  I also monitor the
virtual hostnames associated with the load group.  For a more specific
example, suppose I have three machines which are my web servers, and a load
balancer out front.  I'll check the http service on all three real machines,
the status of the load balancer itself, as well as the http service for the
"www" host, which is really only an IP address on the load balancer.

Works like a charm.
