check_traceroute

Dear Ladies and Gentlemen,

The check_traceroute plugin contributed by M Place seems to be a
particuarly effective way of disambiguating faults in outsourced hosts
from faults in outsourced networks to which they are connected.

In this case, the parents directive may be be less helpful because

1 The providers network is opaque

2 You don't want to monitor - or cannot - each node in the providers
network.

Has anyone any experience with monitoring in this situation, or use of
the check_traceroute plugin, that they would like to share ? I accept
that some of the caveats above may make the check_traceroute plugin
useless (eg routers that don't respond with TTL expired, firewalls etc).

In this case, I think that check_traceroutes results could be useful
in a global event handler that once it is certain that an event is the
responsibility of a provider to

1 notifiy the provider by email

2 open a trouble-ticket/request (by email) with the wonderful 'Request
Tracker' software.

Yours sincerely.

continent, a part of the main. If a clod be washed away by the sea,
Europe is the less, as well as if a promontory were, as well as if a
manor of thy friend's or of thine own were. Any man's death diminishes
me, because I am involved in mankind; and therefore never send to know
for whom the bell tolls; it tolls for thee...'
