check_log not working properly

I use syslog-ng with one of its destinations as swatch as well as the 
usual log files. this means I don't need to worry about log rotation and 
each host's log files are in a separate directory. I'd recommend 
syslog-ng over the syslog daemon with solaris for instance.

We're getting a bit OT but I can provide you with my syslog-ng config 
file off list if it would help.
