Escaping in Serviceextinfo notes_url

Greetings list,
I use a service extinfo definition wtih

notes_url=apan.cgi?host=$HOSTNAME$&service=PING

to save me changing the url for each host.  However, when Nagios
interpolates a host which has '-' in it's name, it is escaped to %2D,
causing Apan not to recognise it.  Any ideas how I can prevent this?
