That's one way of doing it.  If the remote hosts are directly reachable
by a unique IP address then you can use check_by_ssh.  If they're behind
a firewall then you can use NRPE or NCSA running on the firewall (or
other accessible machine).  You could also make use of a VPN.  Caveat
implementor...
