Checking VPN status on remote machine

Yes I could do that I guess except my nagios is off one of the external
interfaces of the customer pix. So I believe, and correct me if I am wrong,
but by doing that I would just be able to ping the external interface and
would only know if the router itself lost connectivity to the Internet, not
if the VPN itself was down.

Why not add host entries for the VPN gateways on both sides and then set
up a parent relationship where the local VPN gateway is a parent to the
remote VPN gateway and the remote VPN gateway is a parent to some host on
the remote side. Then just ping all three hosts and you will be set.
