What version of plugins do you have?  Here's my results:

[root at mindseye nagios]# /usr/lib/nagios/plugins/check_http -H somehost 
-e 401
HTTP ok: HTTP/1.1 401 Access Denied -   0.004 second response time 
|time=  0.004

[root at mindseye nagios]# /usr/lib/nagios/plugins/check_http -V
check_http (nagios-plugins 1.3.1) 1.24.2.4
