Eric - here's what I do...I use the following program to send my Windows 
Event logs to a central syslog server:

http://ntsyslog.sourceforge.net/

Then from there, it's really easy to use perl or any one of the many 
syslog parsing programs to detect and/or notify you if there are any errors.
