check_nrpe suddenly starts reporting "No output returned from plugin" [2nd attempt]

I've looked through the FAQs and archives and can't find an answer to this 
one. I have been using the check_nrpe plugin for months and months and 
suddenly today, I get hundreds of "Unknown" checks because Nagios isn't 
able to get a reponse from the nrpe client. My checkcommands.cfg file 
defines check_nrpe as follows:

define command{
         command_name    check_nrpe
         command_line    $USER1$/check_nrpe -H $HOSTADDRESS$ -c $ARG1$ -t 
$ARG2$
         }

I can run the following:
/usr/local/nagios/libexec/check_nrpe -H 172.16.x.x -c check_disk1 -t 10
DISK OK [4569916 kB (60%) free on /dev/md0]

I've tried shutting down all Nagios processes and restarting the daemon but 
that had no effect. I also notice the checks aren't getting logged in the 
nagios.log file. All other checks are getting logged but not the nrpe 
checks. Any suggestions?
