Host check_commands

The problem I am seeing is that the host (when viewing nagios) remains
CRITICAL (red) because the host check was never performed again after the
service returns to an OK state. So the host appears to be down while the
service appears to be up? Is this the intended purpose, or am I missing
something? How can I get the host OK (green) again?
