Nagios check_oracle script problems

I am running Nagios on RH 9 and running Oracle 10 on the same machine. And
although I can run the "./check_oracle --tns orcl" and "./check_oracle --db
orcl" scripts from the command line as root, I am unable to get it to run
sucessfuly from Nagios. All of my scripts are owned by the nagios user, and
I have added the oracle_home and other environment variables to the
following locations

/etc/profile
/home/nagios/.bash_profile
and even the /usr/local/nagios/ilbexec/check_oracle script itself.

however, when the check runs in Nagios I get the following message

Cannot determine ORACLE_HOME for sid orcl

Any suggestions? this would seem like an easy fix
