Increase the efficiency of passive checks

Sure. I rewrote the PERL application that checks SNMP on my systems and
generates the passive check results to run multiple times in parallel with
each instance checking a different subset of systems. Apparently my problem
was more due to slow SNMP responses then the named pipe running out of
space. Running in parallel allows the whole set of checks to complete in
less than half the time. I still believe that the issue should be
researched to see if there is a more efficient way of submitting external
commands to Nagios then through a named pipe, but for now it seems to work
pretty well.
