one of the default answers: it depends ... on what you're trying to
monitor

- you can use check_smtp to check qmail's smtp *service*
- you can also use check_procs to see if your qmail process is running
- and you can use check_mailq to see if your mailqueue is overflown ...

we use check_smtp and check_mailq to monitor our mailservers ;)
