Nagios to monitor custom shell scripts

Hello,

I was searching for a monitoring tool to check if my jobs (shell scripts) 
ran and with which state (successful, failed). Eventually I'd like to even 
start them using Nagios.

I read in the FAQ about the plugins and thought it might be possible to 
write one for that purpose.

I now want to ask if anybody has a similar requirement and what the 
expirience with Nagios was.
