no trick "just works" (TM) :-)

You might want to get rpms for it though. It is a whole lot easier.

Try:
http://dag.wieers.com/packages/nagios/

That site also has plugins ncsa and nrpe. The srpms are there if you wish to
build the rpms yourself.
