FW: No status.log updating with Nagios running

I had everything working great (so why fix it right?), then I tried to
add gd and the libraries necessary for statusmap and now have a problem.
When I start nagios, things look fine.  But when I log into it, all the
cgi's say that the status log has no information and sure enough,
status.log is empty.  I can't find any error information in nagios.log
and the service seems to run fine (even can see the processes where it
runs the defined checks).  What am I missing?  I think I have
permissions correct (have checked it several times).
