I'm guessing you have preserved configs from an earlier install? 

This was a problem in the past, but AFAICT it is fixed in CVS and in the 
recent releases. 

You should have: 

/usr/bin/printf "%b" "***** Nagios 1.0 **  ..... 

As someone mentions, 'echo -n' will work for some systems, but it is not 
portable.
