Decrease network usage (check hosts and services)

Hi folks,

Today I check the availability of the hosts doing a generic ping (services.cfg):
define service{
        host_name               *
        service_description     PING
        check_command           check_ping!150.0,30%!500.0,60%
        max_check_attempts      5
        normal_check_interval   5
        retry_check_interval    3
        <snip>
        }

And also I'm doing the following (hosts.cfg):
define host{
        use                     generic-host
        host_name               firewall
        alias                   Firewall
        address                 10.2.200.73
        parents                 routeswitch
        check_command           check-host-alive <snip>

But it's generating too much traffic in my network (~14MB in a day). This is not good.
What does anyone suggest?
