That did it...this is what I ended up doing:

./configure --with-gd-inc=/usr/opt/freeware/include
--with-png-inc=/usr/opt/freeware/include
--with-jpeg-inc=/usr/opt/freeware/include
--with-tiff-inc=/usr/opt/freeware/include

Thanks.  Now I'm on my way to the next step.  :-D

Did you provide --with-gd-inc=<path_to_gd> ???
