POSIX compliant systems _must_ not interleave messages wriiten to a FIFO 
that are less than 512 bytes.

POSIX compliant systems may have a larger value than this, but 512 is
the largest value you can assume for portability.

On this FreeBSD 4.7 system, the pipe buffer size is 512 bytes,
