Nagios question on State type

Hello, I'm currently playing with Nagios on my local network and I'm
wondering why the state type is HARD when the current status is OK?

When the status goes into CRITICAL or UNKNOWN the state type goes into SOFT
(isn't this backwards?)

This occurs on active and passive checks. If a service (passive or active)
recovers, how can I force the state type to be SOFT again?

-- example of active --
Current Status: OK
Status Information: HTTP ok: HTTP/1.1 200 OK - 0.007 second response time
Current Attempt: 1/3
State Type: HARD
Last Check Type: ACTIVE

Shawn.
