Empty status.log file

My status.log file is empty. I had this up and running for weeks and made not changes. I went to hit the website and I got the following message when I tried to look at service or host details:
"There doesn't appear to be any host status information in the status log... Make sure that Nagios is running and that you have specified the location of you status log correctly in the configuration files."
Nagios is running as indicated by
[root at northernbytesconsulting etc]# ps -ef |grep nagios
nagios    1130     1  0 13:12 ?        00:00:00 /usr/local/nagios/bin/nagios -d
and the path is correct in the nagios.cfg file it is
status_file=/usr/local/nagios/var/status.log
if I stop nagios the status.log file disapears and upon restart it is back but empty. Anyone have any ideas? I tried gooleing on this problem as well as searching the archives and did not come up with anything. Any help would be appriciated.
Thanks,
Don
